| Wray Community District Hospital. Big name, impressive implications. If you were to research the historic definition of hospital, the word "care" pops up an awful lot. And the word community implies a group of people who look out for, or care for each other. So in other words, the Wray Community Hospital is a place where one can receive care, generally health care, from folks that have our best wishes in mind.
Have you all seen, read, or heard about the impressive new $5,ooo,000,ooo Dollar expansion at the Wray Community Hospital? Woo Dogies, it will be a beaut! Just what we all wanted, right? |
| I have heard comments around town asking how a small community hospital can pay 5 million cash for an expansion? Have we paid, or overpaid, so much for health care that the hospital can afford 5 million bucks for an expansion? Well surely for that type of money, the hospital will be able to handle so many more over night care patients? Nope, the expansion is just for rehabilitation. Oh, and few more offices (need to keep the Docs comfortable).
You know, the comments I have heard border on what some might call, grumbling. And if I, who doesn't socialize in the town, hear that much grumbling, it makes ya wonder if the hospital is living up to its community nomenclature? And if it ain't representing the community, then is the hospital really caring for us in the community? Or is it just following the dreams of a few, a quest to become bigger and hence able to bring in more revenue? I am curious, am I the only one that does not equate care with monetary gain? I bet not, especially when you are in serious need of medical attention and the hospital is asking you how you plan on paying for their services, got an insurance card? Has the hospital board, you know the community members that run the hospital, been led astray by a few Docs that only want to expand so that their revenue is more grandeur? Or is the board under the impression that bigger is better? Do we need to remind them and ourselves that it ain't about how big or fancy the hospital is, it is suppose to be about care! I'll give ya an example, I went in with my Dad to see one the Specialists. The specialist had called, well not him but an employee called, and asked Dad to come in because they needed to talk. That alone would make a feller a bit nervous. So, there we were, waiting for the Doc, oh I forgot to mention that the Doc had called and bumped up the appointment so he could get out of town faster, and wondering what the Doc needed to tell Dad that was so important that he had to make an earlier then usual appointment? Well, to make a long story short, it was an infection and the Doc wanted to write Dad a prescription! What? Okay, maybe we can claim bad bedside manners for raising our blood pressure and making us nervous, but couldn't the Doc much more easily, and cheaply, have used the telephone to tell Dad this? Nope, can't bill as much for that. This how the hospital is making money for the expansion. Not by caring for the individual, but by caring for the Doc that wants to line his coffers and therefore bring in more billable hours for the "Community Hospital". Years ago when Docs were still taking in eggs and milk as payment for their services, didn't we have better care? Oh sure, we have better gadgets and fancier surroundings today, but do we have better care? |
